home on mars
by jessica highfield
i knew if i was lucky,
i’d one day find a home.
through scattered stars and asteroids,
i dreamed the chance to spot my own.
i settled down on mars,
red beacon of strength and protection.
it loved me so good,
i was sure of this direction.
the years have flown by,
and now it’s all i’ve known.
i’m more than satisfied,
yet still i sometimes want to go.
to saturn i’m off,
i’m enchanted by its rings.
elated at the promise,
of being shown new things.
it’s different like i thought,
the ammonia-scented air.
i have the growing sense that i
could make home anywhere.
though my findings have changed me,
mars will always have my heart.
full of happiness and warmth,
i head back to my start.
there are no green pastures,
just different shades of dust.
i want to see them anyway,
so i’ll visit once a month.
